about

WARNING: "Cluburbia - Octomix" is the SPATIAL MIX VERSION of the album designed for playback on surround sound systems.

IF YOU INTEND TO LISTEN IN STEREO, either through headphones or through a regular stereo, please download the regular "Cluburbia" album, NOT "Cluburbia - Octomix." They're both pay what you like.

If you are interested in experimenting with multichannel (more than stereo) playback, this Octomix version is for you.

"Cluburbia - Octomix" is the 8-channel surround mix version of the album, such that each song is rendered into four stereo tracks. It may take some effort.

Here are some notes to help.

As the founder of the MIT Spatial Sound Lab, I'm interested in making spatial audio production and playback more accessible to everyone, so if you're interested in experimenting in this space, please feel free to contact me for advice and troubleshooting. I'm happy to hear your advice too.

HOW TO PLAY this multichannel album.

The tracks are organized for 8-channel surround, starting at the Front Left as channel 1, and moving to the right (clockwise, looking down from above at your setup, one channel at a time, counting to 8 (Side Left). I did not create a separate subwoofer track.

I imagine that the easiest way to go is to import these into your DAW (digital audio workstation), use a surround panning tool to put each mono track in position in circle, and then play or render to your particular playback configuration. Keep in mind the stereo tracks should be treated as two mono tracks (either split them using an editor, or use panning to isolate the right and left tracks).

I use Live, and I work with Envelop for Live tools (free at Envelop.us) as well as Dolby Atmos Production Suite. Live 11 comes with a "surround panner" as well. There are many other options as well.

After setting the audio objects in 8-channel surround, you can playback through any speaker configuration.

For example: Track 1, "Welcome to Cluburbia" is broken up into 4 stereo tracks.

1A - Left (Left track of the downloaded stereo track) to Front Left (output)
1A - Right track (of stereo download) to Front Center (output)
1B - Left to Front Right
1B - Right to Side Right
1C - Left to Back Right
1C - Right to Back Center
1D - Left to Back Left
1D - Right to Side Left

Or, here's a graphic portrayal of the octomix layout.

1A-L 1A-R 1B-L

1D-R you 1B-R

1D-L 1C-R 1C-L

If you manage to accomplish playback, I'd be delighted to hear how it went.
